Candidate Q&A

What is your stance on paid parking?

I would not have approved paid parking. I believe the financial data presented to the Commission in the capital improvement plan should have been reviewed more thoroughly and priorities adjusted to allow for a more detailed review of the city's financial requirements along with potential revenue sources.

What is your position on the ethanol plant?

I am opposed to RYAM’s proposed bio-ethanol plant being built within the city limits of Fernandina Beach. The operation of the ethanol plant involves new chemical manufacturing and refining which are types of industrial uses specifically prohibited by the City’s Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code. This prohibition was put in the Comprehensive Plan to ensure a safe environment and quality of life for residents.

How would you protect Fernandina Beach’s disappearing tree canopy?

Fernandina Beach was awarded the status of Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation. Since that time, we have lost much of our canopy. I support strengthening penalties for property owners who remove multiple trees without a permit. I would support adopting a per-tree fine structure. Protecting trees is very important to me. I have observed that tree decline often shows up many years after a construction site has been completed. I want to ensure that tree protection zones (TPZs) are utilized and properly installed on construction sites to preserve and protect tree health by avoiding damage to tree roots, trunk, or crown.

How would you describe the problems of Fernandina Beach?

Our home faces real hurdles that require steady leadership. We must tackle the pressures of rapid growth while preserving our small-town charm. I am focused on improving infrastructure, fixing our budget transparency, and protecting our natural resources for future generations.

Protecting Our Sea Turtles

As a Florida Fish and Wildlife–permitted sea turtle monitor with Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch, I identified and recorded nestings and emergences to help protect sea turtles in Fernandina Beach and on Amelia Island for 15 years.
